The Royal BC Museum had a temporary exhibit of the history of Egypt that was quite interesting (though most of which I’ve seen before personally at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto), but the museum of natural history, human history and native history permanent exhibits were done quite well!

The natural museum was loaded with both information on climate change, life size statues of the animal kingdom – past and present – and information on the local aquatic wildlife.

The human history exhibition was filled with life size replicas of BC’s past. From a walk-through of the British naval ship discovery that charted the coastline of BC for the British, to BCs gold mining rush (complete with a replica mine) and a early 1900s era town – the entire tour was quite well done.

The First Nations exhibit was unique in that it offered both audio and video exhibits on the various native languages in the BC region. Very fascinating to see and learn. 

After I wandered the museum for a few hours, I checked out the IMAX where I saw Myseries of Egypt, a 1998 IMAX movie featuring Omar Sharif. It was o.k. and I would only recommend it for the sprawling visuals on the IMAX screen.

After that, I went for a quick cup of coffee and met with my friends and Sophia for the evening conference gala.

Tomorrow, I’ll be the one going on a quick business trip in Vancouver.

We took this stroll all the way to the breaker and lighthouse where we spotted a seal in the ocean! Our first view of the oceans native habitat!

The next stop was Mount Douglas, where we hiked up to the top and enjoyed breathtaking views of the island.

Finally, at the end of the day we finished off by going to one of our friend’s colleagues ‘Wimbledon Theme’ party at their house.

We had an amazing time, surrounded by great company!

Day 3 didn’t start too well. We partied a bit too hard the night before and it took us a little while to get back on our feet!

Since we didn’t want to waste the day, everyone crawled out of bed to take a drive up to a special lookout that offered more beautiful views of the mountains and Salish sea.

Victoria is such a beautiful place to explore, with something to discover in every nook and cranny. Even the downtown core and surrounding suburbia is beautifully kept and has its own wonders and sights. For a small city, it really keeps its natural beauty which is all part of its charm.

That being said, beautiful views can’t substitute for hunger! We then decided to go back towards the wharf and took a seat on Fish hook‘s patio. This restaurant is owned by the same owner as Red Fish Blue Fish (see day 1 post). It’s an Indian infused seafood restaurant that serves some unique and delicious dishes.

Needing to walk off the calories gained, we took a brief tour of the gardens of the Governor General and explore the downtown core some more.

Exhausted from the night before, we ended the night a bit early to get ready for the next day.

The 2018 summer trip was meant to explore the western part of Canada. Sophia had a conference planned in Victoria and I had business meetings in Vancouver, so it seemed like an opportune time to make a 2 week vacation out of it!

If you’ve never been to the west coast, then you’re missing out. Both of us being from the mid-east coast part of Canada, we found the west so much more peaceful, with the gorgeous mountains, hiking trails, and never-ending array of natural beauty. To find out more and view pictures throughout our trip, don’t forget to follow the rest of the blog posts from Victoria to Vancouver to Whistler and all across Alberta. 

So, it was finally time to board our flight from Toronto to Victoria airport late on Thursday night to stay with a couple of friends. Sophia’s sister also accompanied us on the trip which made it even better!

Friday morning was spent hiking the Goldstream National Park, where we did a 1.5 hour hike that was rewarded with waterfall view at the ‘little’ Niagara Falls and a lookout on top of an old train track bridge near the apex of the mountain.

As you can see, the views were gorgeous, the bridge treacherous, but the time spent with friends was unforgettable!

After our hike, we worked up an appetite and went to the very popular Red Fish Blue Fish restaurant on Wharf Street.

Sophia had always wanted to go back to Victoria (since 2014) and actually last in the lineup. So, we took a chance and after a 20-minute lineup (definitely worth the wait!), we were rewarded with some fantastic fish and chips, deep fried pickles, tacones, and ginger beer. While more expensive than expected, it was worth every penny!

After our hearty meal we walked around Victoria taking in the beautiful sights in the more touristy areas.

We ended our night back at our friends’ house where we ate a nice home cooked meal and treated to a wide selection of scotch.

A great end to a first day!

In all the years I’ve been to Las Vegas, I’ve never ventured out to the Grand Canyon National Park.

It’s been on my “travel to-do” list for a while now, since this was Sophia’s first visit to Las Vegas, we made sure we fully got to experience the Grand Canyon!

We decided to the Grand Canyon Connoisseur with Helicopter tour of the South Rim with Grand Canyon Scenic Airline Tours on our second to last day.

Our day began with a pick-up at 5am at the Carriage House with a bus trip to a small airport in Boulder City. This is where we boarded a small 12-seater plane that crosses the North and South Rims of the Grand Canyon to a helipad where we would take the tour.

That initial plane ride was almost as good as the helicopter tour! It was fantastic being in a small plane as it shook and went up and down with the loud roaring of the engines only dampened by the headsets we had to wear.

I’ve never experienced a small plane like that, but I thought it was really awesome!

Side note: I felt a bit like I was on an Indiana Jones adventure!

The views from the plane were also breathtaking, including a ride over the Hoover Dam.

If you’re deciding if you should do the helicopter tour or the plane tour over the Grand Canyon – both are equally great and you won’t be disappointed!

Finally we arrived at Papillon Grand Canyon Helipad.

This is where four of us boarded the small red helicopter that took us on a 30 minute tour over the South Rim!

The pictures speak for themselves, but they still can’t do justice to the grandiose nature of the Grand Canyon!

The helicopter ride and visit to the Grand Canyon fulfilled two dreams of a lifetime!

We then ventured on with a great driver who took us on a ground tour for about an hour. This gave us a chance to sightsee the area and local visitor sites.

Afterwards, we had another excellent plane ride back to Boulder City, where we continued on to Las Vegas, just in time for lunch (around 1pm) at the Bacchanal Buffet at Caesar’s Palace!

Sin City. I’ve personally visited Las Vegas at least a dozen times, always for business except for one family trip years ago when I was in my early 20’s.

Asides from my family trip when I was younger, my trips to Vegas are usually about attending trade-shows (CES being the big one!) during the day and taking out clients at night. I wanted the chance to enjoy Vegas as a tourist, and for Sophia, to experience it for the first time.

You can find online a million websites that offer tips and tricks for Vegas – slip the concierge a $20 at the hotel desk for an upgrade, enlist in some “magic” system to improve your odds at the tables, or how to score free/cheap dinners. I’m sure some of them work (and some don’t), but I never tried any of them – and yet, we still had fantastic deals throughout the whole trip that I will share in this post.

First, we went to Vegas the last week of February, when there were no major tradeshows or events (prices spike during big events in Vegas – a cheap $30/night room at Circus Circus can go up to $200/night during the second week of January during CES for example!).

Secondly, we wanted to be on the Las Vegas Blvd (The Strip), but decided on booking a hotel just slightly off strip – The Carriage House. Located right next to Planet Hollywood, it’s was so close to the strip you could almost consider it “on strip”).

These two decisions saved us a ton of money from the get-go without sacrificing……well, anything! We ended up with a beautiful suite at The Carriage House with a King bedroom, living room and full kitchen – all for the price of a regular 1 bedroom room! Why? I didn’t slip the concierge a $20 (which may have worked), but I showed up in February in cool weather, when less tourists were in town, and they had a surplus of rooms. Then…I just asked if they had anything nicer, and that was it! It was an incredible, quiet hotel that was just slightly off strip. No Casino downstairs in the hotel which also meant no disturbances. What a perfect Las Vegas base of operations for us!

If you do end up at the Miracle Mile Shops, I’d suggest stopping by Madness Cup (permanently closed 2019). If anything, look for a place that serves Dragon’s Breath (frozen liquid nitrogen ice).

Before I get into the week spent at The Strip, I need to fill you in on our first night spent downtown on Fremont Street, with a room at the Plaza Hotel & Casino. While I’ve personally stayed and been on Fremont Street at night, Sophia had not, and she had to experience it. That’s why we literally got off our plane at 11pm, hopped into an Uber to the hotel, checked-in, and went out for our first night in town!

If you’ve never been to Fremont Street and have only been on the Strip, well, you’re missing out on a great time! Fremont Street deserves a night with its lit up overhead light show (called the Viva Vision Light Show), activities ranging from Zip-lining, numerous casinos such as the famous Golden Nugget, piano bars, live bands playing on stage at numerous intersections, and much more; there’s so much to do in the compact street of Fremont.

Better yet, it’s a different atmosphere. Gambling (overall) will cost you less, with better odds on certain games, the food and alcohol is (somewhat) cheaper, and it certainly feels like an all night party… not a Vegas Nightclub party, but a party where everyone is on the streets coming in and out of casinos and bars, singing and dancing and just having a good time.

Walking “The Strip” in the day

After a great night in Fremont, we took an Uber to the Carriage House, which as I mentioned earlier, is a fantastic deal of a hotel, and is in such close proximity from the famous Las Vegas Blvd.

Our days on The Strip were filled with sightseeing in the daytime, and watching a show almost every night. For the daytime sightseeing, there was no set itinerary. I just wanted to show Sophia all the highlights, which meant hitting all the big casinos and seeing the “free attractions”, including….

• WALK THROUGH THE MIRAGE ATRIUM AT THE MIRAGE HOTEL AND CASINO
• WALK THROUGH THE FORUM SHOPPES AT CAESAR’S PALACE AND WATCH THE FALL OF ATLANTIS (every house at 11am)
• 
• WALK THE MIRACLE MILE SHOPS AT PLANET HOLLYWOOD
• WALK THROUGH THE GRAND CANAL SHOPPES AT THE VENETIAN/PALAZZO
• 
• VISIT THE BELLAGIO – CONSERVATORY, FOUNTAINS (every 30 minutes 3-8pm, every 15 minutes 8pm-midnight), & GRAB ICE CREAM
• 
• VISIT ALL THE OTHER HOTELS – EXCALIBUR, LUXOR, MANDALAY BAY, MGM GRAND, CIRCUS CIRCUS, PARIS, NEW YORK NEW YORK, and TREASURE ISLAND
• 
• VISIT HERSHEY’S CHOCOLATE WORLD
• WATCH THE MIRAGE VOLCANO (every night at 7pm and 8pm)

The above is just the free things you can do on The Strip day or night. Yet there’s so much more (most of which require payment), such as the Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay…

the CSI Experience at MGM Grand (which we did!), and much more.

You can’t probably (actually – almost certainly) fit all of this into one day because the strip is extremely long! It’s 4.2 miles (6.8km), and each Casino is huge! The first time in Vegas I was taken back by how large everything was! If you have a week though, you will have time to walk around, take stand-in pictures (as shown below), and have no problem visiting all the attractions and casinos I listed above.

While we spent most of the daytime with the free attractions, our nights were not so “free”. We ate well at restaurants and went to a show every night, except for the Grand Canyon day trip! It was fantastic, and it was even better due to the Groupon App.

While I’ve used deal websites like Groupon before, for Vegas it really saved money! Almost every restaurant and show we went to had a Groupon deal – ✓ 2 for 1 Brazillian Steakhouse buffet at Pampas Brazillian Grille

✓ 3 shows for the price of 1 at the V Theater at Planet Hollywood

✓ 2 for 1 drinks at MGM

Almost everything we wanted to do had a either a Groupon discount attached to it or given the time of year, we were upgraded to fill up the empty front seats at every show. Combining discounts with the winter lows is a great way to get deals on everything.

So what exactly did we manage to do with 4 full days? We saw….

Vegas The Show at Planet Hollywood. Got a fantastic Groupon discount on this show, and we saw it on our first night. It was fantastic and I would highly recommend seeing it. It goes through all the classic Vegas greats from the Rat Pack to Elvis to Sonny and Cher. Being discounted didn’t take away from it being an incredible show, impressive and a great debut to what Vegas is all about.

TIP: The Planet Hollywood shows are typically much cheaper than other grandiose shows), but no less impressive.

Zombie Burlesque at Planet Hollywood. Another great show that had us laughing the entire time. I walked in thinking it would be a “meh” show (despite stellar reviews), but it ended up being one of the top shows we saw! Plus, it was one of the few that allowed us to take pictures and capture the incredible talent of the artists.

Cirque du Soleil – “O” at the Bellagio. A water based Cirque du Soleil show. It was the top attraction Sophia wanted to attend while in Vegas, despite the cost. Both of us love Cirque du Soleil and found the production top notch! But we didn’t fall in love with it for the value (no discounts on this one!). We thought the touring Cirque du Soleil shows that we’ve seen across the GTA regions and in Montreal were presented in a more intimate tent setting and were better in terms of daring feats and acrobatics. However, the water effects were very well done and unique to this show.

Baz – The Musical at the Palazzo. A mashup of Romeo + Juliet, The Great Gatsby and Moulin Rouge. As mentioned earlier, the time of year allowed us to get a free upgrade and pick any seat as wished. It was very well done, but it wasn’t my favorite. Sophia, however, loved the show and found it to be one of her favourite. So I guess it depends on your taste!

V – The Ultimate Variety Show at Planet Hollywood. A really good variety show with juggling, knife throwing, and more. Really well done and fun! We saw it on our last day in Vegas so it was a good way to end it!

When we weren’t at a show, we visited the Piano Bar at Harrah’s for a few late night drinks, or walked The Strip for a late night slice of pizza. We never ran out of things to do, and we were happy with great food and shows each night!

The food

Asides from activities, we didn’t want to spend tons of money on food (which is quite easy in Vegas!). Not only that, but we don’t like to eat out every night on a trip, as it’s nice to cook once in a while. So armed with a full kitchen in our suite, we got some groceries and made a few intimate dinners before the Vegas shows we went to.

But when we did go out, we relied on Uber and Lyft to get us around, especially on the outskirts of town. This way, we could pick great places near the strip that wouldn’t break the bank!

Le Village Buffet at Paris Hotel and Casino. This is a standard buffet, the quality of the food is so-so at best, but we went because of the medieval French village atmosphere of the Buffet. It was decent food, fairly priced, and was a fun place to eat. Be ready to stand for at least 30 minutes before paying and getting seated.

Firefly Restaurant (off-strip). Sophia and I missed Spain a bit too much (where we travelled 7 months prior), so we had a short 20 minute walk to the Firefly Tapas restaurant just off-strip. With great food, and good prices (especially for Vegas), it’s a nice restaurant if you’re in the mood for tapas.

Pampas Brazilian Grille at Planet Hollywood. We had a 2 for 1 deal from Groupon, but didn’t get our hopes up due to the ratings on Google and TripAdvisor. I must say that we both thought it was a fantastic restaurant, with a great buffet selection and a healthy choice of succulent meats – even better than the Fogo de Chão Brazilian Steakhouse we went to in Rio! Perhaps, again, being there during the winter season, the staff was more attentive to their guests.

Tuscany Gardens (off-strip). A short walk from our hotel, this Italian Restaurant had excellent food and good value. I’ve eaten on strip many, many times before, and I must say the only difference between eating at Tuscany Gardens vs. a more expensive Italian Restaurant on the strip is the price. I highly recommend coming here if you want a nice dinner with a good wine selection, but don’t want to pay Las Vegas Blvd prices.

Cuba Cafe Tapas & Bar Restaurant (off-strip). We went out to Lake Las Vegas to check out the area, and on our way back, we stopped off here for a bit of Cuban food. Quaint spot, great portions, amazing mojitos!

Secret Pizza at the Cosmopolitan. This pizzeria is hidden on the third floor in one of the hallways. Really good Pizza, awesome pricing.

Bacchanal Buffet at Caesars Palace. I’ve heard about this buffet from many friends, colleagues, and online reviews. I thought it would be good, but I wasn’t prepared for how incredible it actually would be. Each station of the buffet didn’t taste like some rolled out frozen dish, but as if it was individually created with time and quality ingredients. I was blown away about how right everyone that had mentioned it really was. It really is a fantastic buffet and probably the best one I’ve ever been to. A bit on the high priced end as far as Vegas buffets go, but well worth it!

What else?

The other thing we did that deserved its own blog post was our trip to the Grand Canyon. It was surreal, fantastic, and 100% worth the trip! For more on this day trip, read Flying through the Grand Canyon.

In addition to all the Vegas attractions, we took the time to enjoy the Chinese New Year Celebrations and the beautiful decorations across different hotels.

Finally, we didn’t really gamble much (as you can tell by the lack of pictures posted). We’re not big gamblers, and personally, I’ve been around it so much during trade-shows that I’m desensitized to it all. The only thing we did was try our hand at a few slot machines here and there, when we had time to spare. It was quite fun! The one thing we regret is not having had the time to go dancing at any clubs and that’s something we will have to plan for our next trip out!

Even without gambling, there’s so much to do in Vegas that we need to come again soon! More shows, more drinks, more food, and more fun!

If you need a day trip from Toronto in the summer, you should check out Cobourg and its beach.

It’s a town on Lake Ontario about a 1 hour drive from Toronto that features a quaint little downtown and a nice beach (rated one of the best in Ontario).

During the summer months, it’s bustling with festivities and markets, including sandcastle competitions. It’s an extremely active beach on any weekend, but particularly when we went during the August long weekend.

What makes it attractive for a beach day is that it is a shorter drive (relatively) than the popular Wasaga beach that’s north of Toronto, and while it’s very busy…we find it less so than Wasaga.

If you dont have a car, you can always rent one to get down there, or take transit. Leave before 8am to get there without having to ensure 3hrs of traffic (like we did!), and if the parking lots are full, there are usually many side streets that are empty to park on, even when it’s bursting with tourists.

And don’t forget to grab some local food and ice cream on your way out!

DAY 1: April 26 2017
With Sophia having a 2-day conference in Montreal, I decided to take the opportunity to join her and explore Montreal.

After a 5.5 hour drive to the French city from Toronto, we arrived around noon and decided to get a head start in exploring by checking out the Saint Joseph’s Oratory, the largest Catholic dedication to St. Joseph in North America. 

Built in the 1930s, this large structure has multiple rooms and levels to explore. At the time, there was an exhibition dedicated to the portrayal of the nativity scene from across the world.  

A busy place on the weekends for tourists, but going midweek can almost guarantee a quiet and peaceful tour of the Oratory, including access to daily mass.

After a few hours well spent, we headed to our Airbnb accommodations in downtown Montreal. While these can be a hit or miss, with careful research you can usually find a great deal on a good place, in the right location and with a view of the city. 

before ending up at one of our favorite Quebec dessert houses Chocolats Favoris. You’ll find multiple locations across the province! When in Quebec, visit this place for some fantastic soft-serve ice cream that can be dipped in a variety of delicious chocolate flavours. 

As we headed back to our place, we enjoyed a temporary outside art exhibit that featured swings that generated musical beats and lit up as you swing!

With Sophia spending the day at her conference, I decided to venture out and explore the older parts of Montreal by myself. 

While I’ve been to the city numerous times, I’ve never taken the time to explore the old port and downtown, so I downloaded the app Histoire Montreal which is a fantastic app that I can’t recommend enough. With multiple circuits for daytime and nighttime, the app (which is fully downloadable onto your phone so no internet is required) walks you through the streets of the old port and downtown, and presents a series of audio clips and pictures as it guides you through the streets.

The coolest part however is at certain locations there is an augmented reality segment where you point your phones camera an area or building and it superimposes a series of scenes over top explaining about the area. 

As a 100% free tour guided app for Montreal, I can’t recommend it enough for exploring the city. 

After doing my own walking tour with the app, the rest of the night was spent with Sophia at the gala she needed to attend to.

Today it was back to visiting Quebec City one more time before heading to Sainte-Adèle for some snowshoeing! 

After the adventurous day we had yesterday and since Sophia was still not feeling well, we decided to take it easy.

In the morning, we visited the Plains of Abraham (historic site from the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in 1759)…. 

we entered a beautiful Anglican Cathedral…

and we strolled the frost covered streets one last time to take in the winter beauty of the town.

We then decided it was time to eat some delicious crepes at Le Casse-Crepe Breton in Old Quebec. 

We then headed back to rest up and to get ready for the rest of our evening. We knew it would take approximately 2 hours to get to our final destination and we didn’t want to be late. Sophia was excited and tired, but she wanted to make sure we didn’t miss out on our last evening in town!

Finally, we went to Festi Lumière at the Quebec aquarium. 

It’s an annual festival with lit up decorations around the Aquarium. 

We not only got to see the decorations, but animals as well!  

In the middle of the walk, there was a heated tent with cocoa for sale, tables, and live musicians playing as well – it was a nice little break in the middle of the walk!

It was fun (albeit rainy) and while not a “must see”, it is an enjoyable way to spend an evening!

Finally, we topped off the night with dinner at La Tyrolienne, a nice little fondue restaurant whose interior resembled a Swiss chateau.

While I’ve had fondue before, this was my first experience at a restaurant having it for both dinner (cheese & meat fondue) and dessert (maple fondue).

It was delicious and an amazing experience! PLUS, you can’t really go wrong with melted cheese or maple! I am definitely going to more of these once I get back to Toronto!

The post Quebec City: Part 4 {Light up the aquarium & indulge in delicious fondue} appeared first on Journey's Dawn.

First off, we forgot to mention how amazing breakfast was at Couette & Cafe Le 253. The hosts created some amazing breakfast, that ranged from smoked salmon eggs on English muffins to pancakes covered in maple syrups and fruits. Everything was presented and decorated as if we were staying at a 5-star resort. Additionally, the hosts were wonderful taking care of me, offering unlimited supply of tea and water bottles to make sure I was comfortable all day. They respected our privacy and even offered Jason alcohol on a countless number of occasions. If I was feeling better, I’m sure we would have spent more time with them! 

Today we decided to venture outside of Quebec City and visit Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré and Hôtel de Glace – both a must see when in the area of this old city! 

In the morning, once we were full and ready to go, our host brought out our car (which was parked in a private garage) and we made our way to Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré! The drive was calm, so I was able to rest, but also took the time to take some pictures of the lake and Montmorency Falls (access closed due to weather conditions). We definitely recommend taking the time to visit the falls during any other season!

Upon arriving, the first thing we noticed is how small the town was, but how massive the Cathedral was, almost looming over the city. 

Although I had been myself as a child, it was still as picturesque and breathtaking as I remember it to be, even in the gloomy cloudy winter skies. We made it in time for French mass (11:30-12:30pm) and ended up doing our own self-guided tour of the Cathedral, using the pamphlet available at the entrance (bilingual option included). Inside, the Cathedral is as enormous as you would imagine it to be. 

Looking at the architecture, statues, and walking around to the smaller chapels and walkways around the Cathedral, there is a lot to experience here. 

We were lucky that it was not extremely crowded and were able to take in the beauty of the artistic works done within the Cathedral.

Once we were done, we decided to stop by a brewery called Microbrasserie des beaux près were we enjoyed 6 taster sized beers with amazing nachos! We even took the time to enjoy a couple of board games on our phone (although they actually have shelves of books and games available too!). Unfortunately, it began to downpour, but we were excited to check out a restaurant that was supposed to be across the street, called Restaurant Les Artistes. With much regret, we walked into a vapour store and the new owner told us that the restaurant closed down October 2016. Keep that in mind if you plan to go! 

So, we went for the second BEST option and chose the old Quebec staple – ST-HUBERT – a chain of chicken restaurants affiliated with “Swiss Chalet”, but specific to the province of Quebec!!! Apart from missing the falls, it was an amazing start to an incredible day!

Since I was still feeling tired, Jason took charge of driving all day and took us on our next adventure, which I was most excited about – Hôtel de Glace! Note: it is situated behind Valcartier Hotel which means you cannot see it from the road. Once we figured out where to park, we went through the Hotel Lobby and were able to purchase our tickets (which can also be purchased ahead of time online!). We chose to do the guided tour + an iced drink which came out to approximately $25/person. It was SO WORTH IT! 

We luckily made it in time for the last guided tour of the evening, in English, at 5pm. We were joined by a few American couples and began our journey through the ice hotel. The hotel is always kept at -5C and each year, a new project is set by the family who owns Valcartier and comprised of thick ice and milk and LED fluorescent lights. 

Each year, there is a unique design that captures the architects’ vision. This year, it was a northern theme, comprised of the Canadian north, including animals like the white owl, whales, and hot chocolate!

As we ventured from room to room (you can visit the ice rooms before the guests turn in at 8pm), we saw how the architects took time to carefully design each room. It was a fantastic experience that no one should miss!

We finished off our tour and ended up in an ice bar where we enjoyed a drink called “L’érablière“, made of maple syrup and Amaretto in an ice glass. Although I really wanted to take the glass home, it started melting and we had to throw it out. 

Once we were done our adventure, we went home and finished our journey around 10pm.

We arrived in Quebec City, on Tuesday February 21st 2017, at Couette et Café Le 253 after a 3 hour drive from visiting our family in Laval. 

The B&B we stayed at was very comfortable and cozy and happen to be vacant from other visitors at the time. The hosts were extremely helpful and took care of answering all our questions.  Upon our arrival, the host took our bags and we had a bit of an incident, paralleling parking. I almost crushed my husband’s feet with the car! Besides that, it was trouble free and we were ready to begin our adventure in Quebec!

Once we were checked in, we decided to venture out and visit Old Quebec. 

It was only a short, but steep walk from the B&B. We made a quick stop at the bank and actually were within walking distance of Chocolats Favoris. The ice cream is covered in a quick drying mountain of flavoured chocolate that makes you feel like you’re eating a chocolate bar. If you’re in Quebec (locations are spread across the province), you should definitely do yourself a favour and check out this chain. 

We enjoyed 2 scoops of the most amazing vanilla covered ice cream (red velvet and coffee).

Afterwards, we made our way slowly through the ascending streets of Quebec city to one of the entrance ways of the old town. As soon as we arrived in the more narrow streets and cobbled sidewalks, it felt like we were transported back to Europe. The buildings were old fashioned, adorned with small market shop signs and people walking around, giving you a strong sensation that you’ve been transported out of America and into the European continent. 

By the time we arrived it was early afternoon and we had yet to grab lunch! We had a suggestion from my sister to check out Aux Anciens Canadiens. 

While located in a touristy area, it wasn’t overpriced, and as you can see, we had fantastic food and felt like home. The restaurant had a cellar-type design with a fireplace, wooden paintings adorning the walls, giving it a charming old European feel. The menu consisted of a 4 course meal for only $20, including an alcoholic beverage, pea soup grand-mère (which is extremely popular in Quebec), Quebec meat pie for me and Lac St-Jean meat pie made with wild meats (tourtière style) for Jason. The two meat pies we had tasted like Quebec home-style food and if you’re in Quebec, you owe yourself to try it!

As it as our first day, the desserts we had were one of the highlights of our trip. We had the Maple bread pudding and maple syrup pie. The bread pudding was drenched in a sweet maple syrup which was completely absorbed in the bread pudding, allowing it to solidify to its deepest core. The maple pie, while not as sweet, complimented the over-sweetness of the pudding. 

Once we were done, approximately around 4pm, we continued our journey by doing an initial tour of the town. We walked the streets, discovering the cute small shops and took in the atmosphere of the area. Afterwards, since I had a cold, we decided to turn in early so that I could rest up and be ready for Wednesday’s adventures.
